Gabriel Thompson Malibu Library Speaker Series

Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Gabriel Thompson is an independent journalist and has written for publications including the New York Times, Slate, The Nation, Mother Jones, and Harper's. A Steinbeck Fellow in Creative Writing at San Jose State University, he is the author of five books. He will be discussing his most recent book, "Chasing the Harvest," is a collection of oral histories from California's migrant farmworkers. The Grapes of Wrath brought national attention to the condition of California’s migrant farmworkers in the 1930s. Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers’ grape and lettuce boycotts captured the imagination of the United States in the 1960s and ’70s. Yet today, the lives, dreams, struggles and exploitation of the 800,000 men, women, and children working in California’s fields, one third of the nation’s agricultural work force, are rarely seen or heard.
