Go Fly a Kite!

Friday, July 28, 2017

Malibu Poet Laureate Ricardo Means Ybarra presents Go Fly a Kite! featuring Malibu fifth grade poets and Asian American poet J-son Woo-chin with musical guests artist DPAK.

The event takes place among the exhibition of beautiful, delicate kites that are currently on display at Malibu City Hall, all hand made by Tyrus Wong, one of the most celebrated Chinese-American artists of the 20th Century.

The young poets will create poems that respond to Wong's artistry. The student poets were selected from a group at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School who participated in an Arts in Education-sponsored Visiting Artists workshop led by Means Ybarra.

J-son Woo-chin is an Asian-American poet who was born in Singapore living in Los Angeles. He is a university lecturer and author of the book "Homing Pigeon" and other works.

DPAK, known as "The Other Deepak" is a musical artist, producer and lead singer who is the front man for the Los Angeles-based group Robot Nature. Their work is best described as a blend of alt-rock, dream pop and electronic music.

The event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be deserved.

The Kites of Tyrus Wong are on display at Malibu City Hall's atrium gallery until August 2, 2017.
